Petals Scattering
They fall now,
Faltering on the way down,
Drifting and hesitating,
Arrows freed but missing the mark,
Contemplating the what if’s and what could have been’s
Like brittle leaves glancing up at the branch -
Why’d you let me go?
As if the branch could answer…
But the expectation still lingers on that long, circular
Fall to the ground.
Drifting and hesitating,
Frightened little boys playing with matches,
Striking the box in bravado,
Dropping the match when it sparks into life!
Why’d you let it go?
One will say to the other,
As if the boy could answer…
Arrows freed but missing the mark -
Like the merry men dancing a jig in the garden,
Trampling the flowers in their glee,
Faltering when they realize the bloom has come off the rose.
They bend down to retrieve the prettiest, fullest flower,
Crushed though it may be,
And they stroke the velvety petals, wondering why,
Oh why didn’t they pay more attention,
- the bloom falls to the ground
Petals scattering, a hodgepodge of questions
Left unanswered,
Expectations lingering…
Why’d you let me go?
