Laura
Laura, Laura,
Dear, sweet Laura,
Your golden locks grow like myth
Through each successive century.
Desire immortalized with each
Feathery stroke of ink on parchment--
A round, rough stone of desolation,
Sinking desperation,
Obsession in a poet’s mind.
Oh, Laura,
I know how love can grow beyond time,
How each longing glance breaks the arrow shaft;
Splintering heart of destiny,
Solace sought in black ink and the dark
Hollowness of earthly life.
Your poet’s love, insurmountable, lives on,
Portrayed in every kiss,
Whether sanctified by humanity or not.
Love’s eternal fluctuating passion
Is found in your name:
Beatrice, Guinevere, Venus--
By his grace, out of his love, you are myth.
